What These Mean
GLOSSARYNext Gen Stats come from the radio-frequency chips in every player's shoulder pads. They measure the things a stat line can't, speed, spacing, and difficulty. These are tracking measurements, not predictions.
- Completion % Over Expected (CPOE)
- Actual completion rate minus the rate an average QB would post on the same throws, given pass depth, pressure, and receiver separation. Positive means more accurate than the throws warranted.
- Time to Throw
- Seconds from snap to release, averaged across attempts. A proxy for how quickly the QB processes and how well the protection holds.
- Aggressiveness
- Percentage of throws made into tight coverage, a defender within one yard of the receiver when the ball arrives.
- Intended Air Yards
- How far past the line of scrimmage a pass was thrown, whether or not it was caught. Averaged, it measures a passer's downfield ambition.
- Rush Yards Over Expected (RYOE)
- Yards gained above the expectation derived from blocking, defender locations, and field position at the handoff. Isolates the back's contribution from the offensive line's.
- Rushing Efficiency
- Total distance the ball carrier traveled divided by the net yards gained downfield. A lower number means a more direct, north-south path.
